It’s Wednesday, here’s some random Tamagotchi trivia

Egg watch.

Yesterday, I found myself on the Wikipedia page for “Tamagotchi.” Not that I have to explain myself, but I found myself there because was researching for an interactive content piece I’m working on at work. (No, I’m not going to tell you what it is yet. It’s a secret.)

Anyway, I stumbled upon many interesting things as I was researching Tamagotchi for this work project yesterday (not least of all, stumbling upon the realization “I can’t believe I’m getting paid to research Tamagotchi trivia”). So, because I’m a generous person, and I need to process some stuff now apparently, I decided to share some of that trivia with you today, so you can “enjoy” it as I did. Here you go:

  1. Tamagotchi is a portmanteau of the Japanese words for “egg” and “watch.”
  2. Per Wikipedia, “As of 2010, 76 million Tamagotchis had been sold worldwide. As of 2017, over 82 million units have been sold.” My first instinct was to the gripe that the best available sales data we have for Tamagotchi is over 3 years old, until I read that part again and saw the real story: 8 million Tamagotchis were purchased between 2010 and 2017. Eight. Million. Tamagotchis. In. The. Twenty. Tens.
  3. Per some math I did on my phone: Assuming that same rate of growth…
